In 2011, jewelry overtook electronics to become the No. 1 item cited in property insurance claims, according to the Contents Claims Index from Enservio, a provider of property insurance software and services. The number of jewelry items claimed grew 57 percent in 2011, and the average price for a piece of jewelry claimed rose by 11 percent, says Keith Pequeno, senior vice president of marketing at Enservio.

To save or not to save? This is often the question asked after a piece of artwork has been badly damaged. The answer may not be clearly apparent to the owner or claims handler. A damaged item that may appear” hopeless” to the untrained eye may actually be an excellent candidate for conservation. While other items that do not “look that bad” do not justify conservation efforts.

Jewelry claims bumped electronics out of the No. 1 ranking position in value and volume for property insurance claims made in 2011, according to new data.The annual Contents Claims Index (CCI) by property insurance software and service provider Enservio found that the number of jewelry items claimed grew 57 percent compared to 15 percent growth in the electronics category for the same year. The average price per piece of jewelry claimed increased by 11 percent with jewelry claims more prevalent on the West Coast of the United States.

Claims for jewelry items rose from 13% among the top ten contents-loss categories in 2010 to 17% for Replacement Cost Value (*RCV) in 2011, taking the top spot as the most claimed loss-item in 2011. Simultaneously, electronics dropped to the number two position, decreasing from 15% in 2010 to 13% RCV in 2011. Jewelry—watches, rings earrings, necklaces, bracelets and other items—comprised the most-claimed insured loss category in 2011, replacing electronics as the top claims category, according to contents claims aggregator Enservio.
The average price per ring claimed increased by 3% in 2011 compared to 2010, and the average price per jewelry item increased by 11% in 2011 compared to 2010, said Keith Pequeno, senior vice president of marketing for Enservio.

As a category, electronics topped the list of the highest-value personal and business items that were stolen, lost or damaged in 2010, according to the new Enservio Contents Claims Index, published by Best’s Review magazine.
Based on dollar value, electronics accounted for 16 percent of the value of personal and business items for which insurance claims were filed in 2010, the index shows. TVs led the electronics category, with 24 percent of the value.
Jewelry was the No. 2 category, representing 15 percent of the total value of claims. Rings made up 44 percent of the value in the jewelry category.
